How Will You Celebrate This Holiday Season?
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year's Eve are not the only holidays celebrated in the month of December. Did you know that December is also National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Month or as some refer to it as National 3D Month? I bet you are wondering what National 3D month actually means. Well, National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Month is a national holiday focused on increasing community awareness on the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, as well as promoting safe and healthy behaviors among individuals. Over the years, National 3D month has increased community support and awareness of drunk and drugged driving prevention and continues to support safer streets.

Although the Holiday Season is in full swing, it does not mean we have to engage in unhealthy and unsafe behaviors that put ourselves and others at risk. There is fun to be had this holiday season without engaging in these activities. Did you know that roughly 11,773 people lost their lives last year due to drunk driving accidents, where the driver had an illegal blood alcohol level (NHTSA, 2009)? How many people have to die before we change a social norm?
I am sure by now you are asking yourself what you can do this holiday season to promote and support safer streets in your community. One important tip to follow if holiday plans include drinking is to always designate a driver who will not be drinking. It is always important to plan ahead. This can save lives! Another simple tip to follow this Holiday Season is to replace alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages. Below you will find a delicious non-alcoholic Holiday punch that can be enjoyed by all
Holly Cranberry Punch
1 bottle of Cranberry Juice
(2 Liter) bottles of Ginger Ale gallon of Vanilla Ice Cream
In a punch bowl, mix cranberry juice and ginger ale. Add vanilla ice cream to center of punch bowl. Allow ice cream to melt slightly. Serve and enjoy
I hope you have a safe and healthy holiday and remember that alcohol abstinence does not translate into a holiday season without joy and laughter.|
Happy Holidays!
Until Next Time,
Peggy
